Why We Need to Talk More About Infertility | National Infertility Awareness Week 2025

1 in 6 face infertility. National Infertility Awareness Week 2025 (April 20-26) breaks stigma & advocates for treatment access. Join #LeaveYourMark to #BreakTheSilence. 🎗️ #NIAW

April 16, 2025

Every year, millions worldwide face a silent struggle: infertility. It’s invisible, rarely discussed, and often endured alone. To change this, National Infertility Awareness Week (NIAW) was born—a campaign that turns silence into action, grief into community, and misinformation into empowerment.

How Did NIAW Begin?

In 1989, U.S.-based nonprofit RESOLVE: The National Infertility Association launched NIAW to shatter the stigma around infertility. Back then, discussing it was taboo. Many—especially women—fought battles without medical, emotional, or financial support.

Today, NIAW (every April) is a global movement, backed by groups like the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM). It’s even inspired similar campaigns, like the UK’s National Fertility Awareness Week (November), led by Fertility Network UK.

NIAW 2025: "Leave Your Mark"

This year, from April 20–26, 2025, NIAW’s theme—"Leave Your Mark"—invites anyone touched by infertility to share stories, join events, and #BreakTheSilence on social media.

RESOLVE emphasizes equitable access to treatments like IVF, egg/sperm donation, surrogacy, or diagnostics. This movement isn’t just for hopeful parents—it’s for fertility preservation, diverse families, and reproductive autonomy.

Infertility Knows No Borders

The World Health Organization (WHO) reports 1 in 6 people globally will experience infertility. It affects all genders, ages, sexual orientations, and economic backgrounds—yet is wrongly labeled a "women’s issue."

Barriers like high costs and legal restrictions limit treatment access. Even in countries with public healthcare (e.g., Spain), long waits push many toward costly private clinics.

Why Visibility Matters

No one should face infertility alone. Thanks to NIAW, more people find support, education, and hope.

At Fertilidad Integral, we believe speaking up changes lives. If you agree, leave your mark. Participation is an act of empathy—and it changes everything.
