Talking about male fertility is still surrounded by taboos. For a long time, the conversation about infertility has focused almost exclusively on women, overlooking the fundamental role that men also play. However, studies show that male factors are present in around 40% of infertility cases in couples (Durán, D., 2025).

Breaking this silence is essential. November, known as the Month of Male Fertility, invites us to raise awareness about the importance of men’s reproductive health and to speak openly about prevention, diagnosis, and options such as sperm cryopreservation.

In this blog, we explain when it’s convenient to freeze sperm, how much it costs in Mexico, and why November is the ideal moment to take the first step.

When is it recommended to freeze sperm?

Sperm cryopreservation is the process of collecting, processing, freezing, and storing a semen sample for future use. It’s the fastest and least invasive fertility preservation technique available.

There are many reasons to freeze sperm, but here are some of the most common:

- Optimal quality: Freezing sperm when seminal quality is high helps preserve proper concentration, motility, and morphology of sperm cells for future use.

- Before medical treatments that can affect fertility: Ideal for patients undergoing chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or testicular, prostate, or pelvic surgeries.

- After cancer recovery: Freezing sperm before cancer treatment allows patients to maintain the possibility of having children after recovery.

- Before gender transition: For individuals beginning a hormonal or gender transition, sperm freezing protects fertility from the effects of hormone therapy.

- Before a vasectomy: For men who want to keep the option of fatherhood open without undergoing reversal surgery.

- After abnormal semen results: If tests show changes in sperm count, motility, or morphology, saving a higher-quality sample can be crucial for future treatments.

Benefits of preserving your fertility today

Male fertility also changes over time. Preserving it is a smart way to anticipate those changes and keep the possibility of starting a family open when the time feels right. Freezing sperm provides freedom, security, and control over reproductive choices and serves as a preventive tool against potential health conditions or medical treatments.

Main benefits include:

- Allows you to plan fatherhood at the right time.

- Provides peace of mind and control over reproductive health.

- Protects fertility before medical treatments or health changes.

- Offers greater flexibility for assisted reproduction treatments.

Freezing sperm isn’t just a medical decision — it’s an investment in your future and a conscious way to take care of your fertility.

How Does the Process Work at Fertilidad Integral?

At Fertilidad Integral, we understand that each person is unique, so every case is evaluated individually. Here’s what the sperm freezing process looks like step-by-step:

1. Evaluation

The first step is a medical consultation with one of our fertility specialists. During this appointment, your medical history is reviewed, and a semen analysis (spermatobioscopy) is performed to assess sperm quality and determine whether freezing is the best option for you. Based on these results, we design a personalized preservation plan according to your reproductive goals.

2. Sample Collection

You’ll schedule an appointment at our clinic for semen sample collection in a private and comfortable space, ensuring your privacy and peace of mind. The sample is then delivered immediately to our laboratory for analysis and preparation.

3. Freezing

Our specialized embryologists and lab technicians prepare the sample with cryoprotectant agents that prevent cell damage during freezing. The sperm are then gradually cooled and stored in liquid nitrogen tanks where they can remain viable for years, protected from time and deterioration.

How much does it cost to freeze sperm in Mexico?

At Fertilidad Integral, the cost of sperm freezing starts at $10,800 MXN (approximately $586 USD).

This includes:

- 1 semen sample

- Processing and freezing for future use in a reproductive treatment

Note: The cost does not include annual storage fees and may vary based on medical evaluation and individual preservation plans. Please check current conditions with our team.

Why is November key for male fertility?

In recent years, November has become a symbolic month for men’s health awareness. Global movements such as Movember, initially focused on prostate cancer and mental health awareness, now also highlight male fertility as a crucial part of overall wellness.

By emphasizing male fertility during November, we can:

- Break the silence and taboos surrounding men’s role in infertility.

- Raise awareness that male reproductive health matters and requires preventive action.

- Promote medical consultations, semen analysis, and preservation as essential parts of men’s health.

- Create a “moment of action” for men who may have postponed evaluating their fertility or considering sperm freezing.

Frequently asked questions about sperm freezing

At what age is it recommended to freeze sperm?

Ideally between 20 and 40 years old, when sperm quality is highest. However, it can be done at any age as long as lab results confirm viability.

How long can sperm be stored?

Sperm can be stored indefinitely. Its viability depends on the initial quality of the sample and proper cryopreservation protocols, not on time.

Is the process painful?

No. At Fertilidad Integral, the process is comfortable, private, and non-invasive. The sample is collected naturally in a confidential setting.

Does sperm quality decrease after thawing?

Thanks to controlled cryopreservation protocols, sperm maintain their structure and fertilizing capacity. While motility may slightly decrease, it doesn’t affect clinical use.

What tests are recommended before freezing sperm?

Before freezing, we perform a medical evaluation and semen analysis. Depending on each case, the specialist may recommend hormonal or infectious disease testing to ensure the sample’s quality and safety.

Where can I freeze sperm safely?

At Fertilidad Integral, we have certified laboratories, advanced cryopreservation technology, and a team specialized in male reproductive health. Each sample is stored under strict traceability and quality control protocols, guaranteeing its integrity and long-term viability.
